INTERNSHIP SITES APPROVED for JAT 399

Here, you'll find information about internships recently held by Journalism or Media Arts and Studies majors. These positions are APPROVED for JAT 399 | INTERNSHIP credit. To be APPROVED, a position must provide the student with substantive work that's related to the JAT education mission. The work must result in professional-caliber materials that a student can include in a portfolio or use as professional work samples.

The internship descriptions below focus on the core tasks expected of an intern. A company may host other types of internships that are unrelated to the missions of Journalism or Media Arts and Studies -- those internships aren't eligible for JAT 399 credit.

The descriptions below also provide contact information. People often change positions within a company/organization or move to another company. If the contact person listed on this site is no longer in the position listed here, ask to speak with the person who currently supervises interns in the position described below. Be resourceful. Take initiative in making sure you connect with the person who supervises the specific position you're interested in. Supervisors expect resourcefulness and initiative on the job. We expect you to take that approach in the search for your internship.

Site descriptions don't always identify specific software to be used/learned at the intern site. That's because it can change even more rapidly than people do. Be prepared to detail YOUR tech capabilities when you interview -- and maybe demonstrate them. ASK what software you'd use as an intern and what support is in place to help you learn new programs. You should look to your internship as a chance to expand your awareness of AND expertise with programs commonly used in the business/non-profit sectors.

Drawing upon their knowledge base and desired study focus, selected interns will be assigned to assist our sports information department, which serves as the marketing and gameday operations branch of the Transylvania Athletics Department.

The selected intern will assist with gameday operations as part of the event management staff, participating actively in various positions integral to the production of a home sporting event and assisting with athletic communications functions as well.

The ideal candidate should be pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree focused towards communications, sport administration, sports marketing, social media management, public relations, and/or sports journalism.

Gameday Operations/Event Management: Intern will be assisting our Sports Information Staff and gameday crew on-site for home games, posting play-by-play style social media posts during event, observing games to create a written recap to follow event, assisting with statistics, and working on the field with officials as correspondence between on-field staff and press box. Intern may also at times work as a “runner” between different media personnel during gameday events.
