Student Organizations

There are a number of professional and social activities available to students in the School of Information Science. Here you will find information on our current student organizations at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Information Communication Technology Student Association (ICTSA)

Majors and non-majors interested in ICT can join the ICT Student Association. The group’s primary purposes are to facilitate communication between students and faculty in the ICT program and coordinate opportunities for student participation in ICT-related programs and activities. Check them out on Facebook and Twitter.

American Library Association Student Chapter & Library and Information Science Student Organization (ALA-LISSO)

Beginning the Fall 2017 academic year, the ALA Student Chapter and the Library and information science student organization merged. LISSO is the social organization for UK's LIS graduate students. Membership in LISSO is free, and all School of Library and Information Science graduate students are automatically enrolled as members when they enter the program.

While membership in ALA is not required to participate in Student Chapter activities, graduate school is a great time to become involved in the largest organization of library and information science professionals in the world. Membership in the UK Student Chapter of ALA is automatic when you join the national organization. Currently, the student rate to join ALA is $34.00. As an ALA member, you will receive:

Tangible benefits such as a subscription to American Libraries (11 issues per year)

Discounts on ALA publications and graphics

Member rates at conferences

Special travel and tour benefits

Voting privileges

A copy of the Handbook of Organization

Professional support through active national programs in legislation, intellectual freedom, standards, research, technology, and more

Information and networking for professional development

A voice in the future of your profession

"The UK Student Chapter of ALA seeks to enrich students' experience at graduate school by providing networking and professional development opportunities. Starting in the fall of 2012, ALA is organizing a mentorship program that pairs new SLIS students with existing ones. ALA also hosts the annual fall orientation event for new SLIS students. We hope that you will become involved in ALA."

Most of ALA's divisions have discounted student rates. For more information on joining ALA visit ALA Membership Information and Services on the Web. For more information about the Student Chapter, contact any of the current officers. To view the Chapter's Constitution, click here. There is also a blog, Facebook, and a Twitter.

Special Libraries Association Student Chapter (SLA)

The Kentucky Student Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is a great way to make connections with other grad students in the program who have an interest in a diverse range of library professions and settings. There will be tours, meetings, panels, and conferences that you can attend as well as service projects throughout the year such as volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. Hope you'll join the fun! You can contact SLA UK through their facebook group.
