Belonging Downtown Photo Walk
5 to 7 p.m.

Join us for the photo walk in downtown Lexington from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, March 8, led by Liz Spencer, University of Kentucky assistant professor and 2014 Photojournalist of the Year, Missouri College Media Association. We invite you to take photos that reflect your interpretation and visualization of “belonging” as you walk through downtown Lexington.

Participants will focus on the prompt of “belonging” and can use the VisitLex self-guided experiences to navigate through downtown and to learn more about Lexington history, art, culture, architecture and sense of place. Downtown landmarks and milestones include key locations of LGBTQ history (Pride of Place tour), African American and Black history (I Was Here project), and visually engaging murals and spaces (Mural Challenge, Little Lex Scavenger Hunt).

On Friday evening, Lexington will host several events, including a comic and toy convention, allowing opportunities to photograph interactions of humans in cityscapes.

We will meet in the lobby of the Hyatt at 5 p.m. and head out in small groups, pairs or individually. You’re welcome to walk with Liz or on your own. Please bring your own camera or device. Wear comfy shoes.

Everyone is welcome. This experience may particularly of interest to members of these divisions and interest groups: Visual Communication, History, Community Journalism, Newspapers and Online News, Broadcast and Mobile Journalism and the LGBTQ Interest Group.

During and after the walk, please post your top 4-5 visualizations of “belonging” Instagram, tagging @uk_ci I and use the hashtag #AEJMCSE24photowalk

We will feature photos during the Saturday business meeting and on College and AEJMC related social accounts.
