Biography

Research Interest: Mohammed Awal examines how health systems, communication processes, and structural inequalities shape access to care and health outcomes, particularly in the context of infectious diseases. Drawing on more than eight years of journalism experience with Ghanaian and international media outlets, including Agence France-Presse (AFP) and The Africa Report, he combines qualitative fieldwork, statistical analysis, and computational infodemiology to study how structural barriers and digital health discourse influence patient care. His recent research explores inequities in Ghana's hepatitis B and HIV care pathways, as well as the public moral framing of pharmaceutical access on social media. As a PhD student at the University of Kentucky beginning in Fall 2026, he will continue investigating how communication, policy, and institutional arrangements shape health equity.
