JOU alum/The Atlantic senior editor teaches masterclass for CI students
Jenisha Watts (JOU, 2008), senior editor of The Atlantic
Alumna Jenisha Watts (JOU, 2008), senior editor of The Atlantic, visited her alma mater to share her story, her perspective on mentorship and her advice to current journalism students.
Watts and her mentor, Nikky Finney were featured as guest speakers for the Center for Graduate and Professional Diversity Initiatives event titled “Sisterhood and Mentorship.” Watts credits her mentor for helping her achieve her success, which most recently included her story being featured on the cover of The Atlantic. During her time at UK, Watts was a student in Finney’s creative writing class, which she said made a lasting impact throughout her career. Their mentor/mentee relationship has grown into a valuable friendship that they shared with the audience.
During her visit, Watts also taught a masterclass on writing for journalism students. Watts’ experience from The Atlantic, ESPN, People Magazine and other well-known media outlets helped her advise and guide these future media professionals. Three of Watts’s coworkers were also able to Zoom in during the class and discuss their own experiences as well.
