2018 ISC Alumni Symposium

The Department of Integrated Strategic Communication (ISC), in the University of Kentucky  College of Communication and Information, will hold its annual ISC Alumni Symposium April 12, 2018 at 6:00 pm in the W.T. Young UKAA Auditorium. The focus of this year’s symposium will be “Digital Transformation: Big Data and Technology in My Organization.” ISC doctoral student Gabby Dudgeon will moderate the panel.

“The is a great opportunity to welcome these successful alumni back to campus and reconnect them with the ISC department,” said Chike Anyaegbunam, ISC department interim chair. “The annual symposium not only helps our students learn about the success of prior graduates but also gives them a peak into the professional world of ISC beyond the classroom and how to succeed in that ever-changing environment.”

The six alumni participating in this year’s symposium include Chelsea Melchor of Jackson|Spalding, Dave Ostendarp of Kroger, Chase Fairchild of Legit Apps, Kali Jakobi of Russell Capital Management, Julie Booher of The Smile Lab, and Rhea Starns of Brand Animal.

Chelsea Melchor is an accomplished Marketing Communications executive with Jackson|Spalding, an agency specializing in public relations, strategy, creative, digital and crisis communications. Chelsea relies on her keen understanding and passion of the media landscape to meet clients’ goals and has landed coverage in national online and broadcast outlets including The TODAY Show, USA Today, TIME, MSN, Mashable, People, BuzzFeed and more. Chelsea’s passion for brand, food & beverage, luxury retail and consumer PR paired with her background in agency environments brings a well-rounded perspective to the clients she has served. She’s provided PR services for clients such as 7-Eleven, Michaels, Sally Beauty, The Tile Shop and Mattress Firm.

Chelsea graduated with honors from the University of Kentucky in 2013 with a BS in Integrated Strategic Communications and a minor in Political Science.

Dave Ostendarp is a 2008 ISC Graduate and has 10 years of experience in digital marketing, product development and analytics. In his current role on Kroger's Connect and Save team, he is charged with innovating the digital coupon user experience. Prior to joining Kroger, he spent four years driving digital channel growth for Newport Aquarium in Northern Kentucky and three years working as an account rep for digital agencies in Lexington and Cincinnati.

Dave holds an undergraduate degree in Integrated Strategic Communications from the University of Kentucky and a Masters of Business from Xavier University. He currently resides in Milford, Ohio with his wife of five years, Lindsey, 2-year-old son, Anthony and 1-month-old daughter, Annie.

Chase Fairchild is the Business Development Director for Legit Apps, an EdTech Company helping schools streamline communications. In his life and work, he focuses on building relationships first.  He is constantly exploring new opportunities for growth and looking to see where he can connect people personally and professionally. As a Lexington native, Chase has been involved with several groups and businesses across the city. He’s done non-profit work with Young Life, launched and managed the charitable clothing brand Provisions, and worked as the Business Development Director for Brand Animal. Throughout all of his experiences, Chase has relied on the skills he developed during his time in the ISC program at the University of Kentucky.

In his spare time, Chase loves spending time with his wife Emily enjoying the city of Lexington, live music, traveling, food, wine, film and writing. He sits on the board for AAF Lexington, does improv with Stage Right and is involved with several other initiatives in town.

Kali Jakobi is the Director of Marketing for Russell Capital Management. She develops and oversees all marketing, public relations and client experience efforts through her extensive knowledge of digital marketing, brand development and client services.

Prior to joining Russell Capital in 2018, Kali was an Account Manager and Marketing Strategist at Creekmore Marketing, a Web Design and SEO Marketing company.

Originally from Lexington, KY, Kali graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Integrated Strategic Communication with a focus in Public Relations. Outside of business, she is actively involved in Young Life, a volunteer student ministry, where she serves as the Team Leader for the Lexington Christian Academy Young Life team. Kali enjoys traveling, spending time with her famil, and the occasional half marathon.

Julie Booher is the director of franchising and development for The Smile Lab and White Greer and Maggard Orthodontics located here in Lexington, Kentucky. She has more than eight years of experience in brand management, public relations and marketing communications working with corporate and brand leaders to create platforms, programs and partnerships that not only deliver on a company's purpose but accelerate social change.

Julie started her career working for the University of Kentucky Public Relations and Marketing department supporting the communications efforts of UK HealthCare and the Kentucky Children’s Hospital. She then moved to Atlanta, Ga. to work at the headquarters of the American Cancer Society, one of the oldest and largest voluntary health agencies in the United States and the largest source of private, nonprofit cancer research funds in the United States. There she became the national director of strategic communications planning and led corporate social responsibility efforts with corporate partners, including Walmart, Kroger, the NFL and Lee Jeans.

A native of Shelbyville, Kentucky, she graduated from UK’s College of Communication and Information with a degree in integrated strategic communications in 2009. While at UK she was a member of many organizations including the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and DanceBlue, and served as the Panhellenic President.

Rhea Starns loves to help people and businesses solve problems and bring ideas to life. She believes in trusting her gut and questioning the status quo. Her marketing experience ranges across retail, automotive, non-profit, event, B2B and other industries. The best part of her job is helping people discover more purpose and value in their own life, work and business. Outside of the office, Rhea kicks back with her fiancé, dog, and a glass of red wine. Oh, and she's the Account Director at Brand Animal.
