College of Communicaiton and Information 2021-2025 Strategic Planning

In early November, Dean Greer engaged in the start of the 2020-2025 strategic planning process for the University, as part of a day-long retreat for the Provost’s Council. Deans worked in teams to envision scenarios of three universities very different from UK and its large public peers. The exercise mirrored one last month involving the president, vice presidents, the Board of Trustees, and select faculty, staff and students. As President Capilouto said in his e-mail following that session: “The time has come to commit ourselves….to new approaches as we seek solutions. The time has come to plan not for what is, but for what is next.”

We, too, are beginning our strategic planning process.

During the days of November 18-19, more than 130 faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the college participated in listening sessions with our Strategic Planning partners Academic Leadership Associates (ALA), to start planning how we will allocate our energy and resources over the next five years. During these listening sessions, the consultants gathered information about our Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations and (desired) Results (SOAR). After the intial sessions, an ad-hoc Planning Council, which will work in depth on the strategic plan throughout the spring semester, started a deeper dive into the SOAR responses.

What is SOAR?
SOAR (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, Results) is a framework that focuses on strengths and seeks to understand and analyze the entire organization by including voices of all relevant stakeholders. SOAR helps an organization focus on what they are doing well, what can be improved and what is most compelling to stakeholders. It pushes organizations to develop strategic plans that are more dynamic, creative and optimistic.

Planning Council 

The Planning Council is usually composed of 35-50 stakeholders from the College's broader stakeholder communities, which include faculty, staff, students, advisory boards, emplyoers, alumni and other key internal/external stakeholders.  

The Planning Council will be the working group in the strategic planning process, but they will be reaching out to the CI community throughout the spring to ensure that every voice is heard throughout.
