Beth Barnes Named Director of Undergraduate Studies for ISC

Lexington, KY — The Department of Integrated Strategic Communication (ISC) in the College of Communication and Information has named Beth Barnes as its Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). Barnes is the second ISC faculty member to assume the title, replacing outgoing DUS Hyun Ju Jeong.

Jeong, who pioneered the newly created position in 2018, describes the DUS role as “[contributing] to the academic and intellectual growth of the department through consultation with faculty, staff, and committee members on matters including enrollment policy, curriculum development, and course offerings.”

The DUS supports the academic experience of ISC students by advising them one-on-one, collaborating with CI advising staff on course enrollment, and working with various faculty and staff members to address pressing needs for ISC’s undergraduate program.

In addition to her new duties as Director of Undergraduate Studies for ISC, Barnes acts as the Executive Director of International Studies for CI. She has taught both pre-major (ISC 161 and 261) and upper-division (ISC 311, 341, 351, 399, 491 and 551) courses in ISC. She also teaches education abroad, regularly offering courses in Cape Town, South Africa and London, United Kingdom. She is currently the chair of Education Abroad Committee of UK’s International Advisory Council. Barnes earned her Ph.D. and master's from Northwestern University and her bachelor's from the College of William and Mary.

“We have a lot of terrific students in ISC,” Barnes said. “I see my job as DUS as helping our students stay on track for graduation and getting the education and experiences they need for successful careers after UK. It’s also my responsibility to help troubleshoot when they encounter snags on the way.”
