ISC Courses

The college offers ISC/JOU/MAS 319: World Media Systems, at least once a year. The Department of Integrated Strategic Communication also regularly offers ISC 381, International and Cross-cultural Advertising, and ISC 382, Global Public Relations Strategies. In addition, several school faculty members teach study abroad courses.

We try to offer a course during the winter intersession each year. In 2021-22, we'll be offering ISC 583: Strategic Communication in the United Kingdom, a course in London, England focused on cultural similarities and differences in strategic communication. We also offer ISC 583: Strategic Communication in South Africa: Promoting to the "Rainbow Nation" during May each year. This three-week course is based in Cape Town, South Africa and includes visits to area advertising and public relations agencies and Cape Town sights (Robben Island, Table Mountain, District Six Museum and others). Students develop communication campaigns for non-profits in the area, including orphanages, women's shelters, recycling firms and other groups working in the townships. Our second Cape Town-based course is ISC 583: Promoting the South African Wine Industry. This June 2021 course will involve learning about the historical, social and cultural contexts of South Africa's growing wine industry as well as developing ideas for promoting U.S.-based wine tourism to South Africa and sales of South African wines in the U.S. This program is open to students who will be 21 years old or older by the conclusion of the program. (Eligible students may take both this course and the May course, for a total of six weeks in South Africa.) Contact Dr. Beth Barnes for details.

Note: Either of the Cape Town programs will fulfill the department’s capstone course requirement, for students who have completed all pre-reqs for capstone.

We will also be offering ISC 583: Branding, Messaging and Digital Strategies in London, a two-week course, in Summer 2021. Students will visit area media sites and hear from communication professionals while working on multimedia projects. Contact Prof. Sarah Geegan for details.
