ISC Faculty Member Beth Barnes Named 2022 UK “Great Teacher”

ISC’s Beth Barnes, now retired, was among six University of Kentucky educators to be named 2022 Great Teachers by the UK Alumni Association. To receive the award, educators must first be nominated by a student. The UK Alumni Association Great Teacher Award Committee, in cooperation with the student organization Omicron Delta Kappa, then makes the final selection.

“[H]er lectures were thoroughly engaging, providing real-world examples from her personal experience in the field and beyond,” said Courney Cavallo, an ISC senior in her letter nominating Barnes. “Leaving soon to enter the workforce, I have never felt as prepared, as Dr. Barnes exposed us to numerous resources that made us feel like true ISC professionals.”

ISC Faculty Member Elizabeth Spencer’s Art Selected for UK’s Reimagining Medicine Festival

ISC Assistant Professor Elizabeth Spencer was selected to present selections from her illustrative photograph and artwork series (including the above photo) at UK’s 2022 Reimagining Medicine Festival. The Festival, which took place from March 5-11, “stemmed from the mental health difficulties we have all faced through the COVID-19 pandemic” and was designed “to bring art and healthcare together to re-examine healthcare aims, discuss creative solutions, and share raw and honest artwork to engage in deeper community discussions around racism and racial equity.”

Spencer says that “art can impact how we experience illness, loss, grief, health, and mental health. How we use art can help us reimagine and better understand health and illness experiences. It can help us cope through difficulties; help us relate to and better understand one another.
