Ten ISC Students Awarded Scholarships

The Department of Integrated Strategic Communication (ISC) in the College of Communication and Information has awarded ten scholarships totaling $8,750 to students for the spring 2019 semester. The scholarship winners were recognized at the 2018-2019 CI Student Awards Ceremony, which was held April 11 in the Gatton Student Center.
 
Recipients were chosen through a competitive selection process after meeting specific criteria and submitting application materials.
 
Chike Anyaegbunam, interim chair of the ISC department, commended the scholarship winners for their hard work and dedication. He also thanked the donors who made the scholarships possible for their generosity and continued support for the department and its students.
 
The awardees are listed below:

  • The Bernie Vonderheide Scholarship in Public Relations has been awarded to Kaitlyn Summe of Crestview Hills, KY and Lauren Howard of Naperville, IL. The Bernie Vonderheide Scholarship in Public Relations was established in 2005 to honor Bernie Vonderheide. Vonderheide spent 23 years of his public relations career speaking on behalf of the University of Kentucky. He received the 2005 Kentucky Excellence in Public Relations Award and the CI Friend of the College Award in 2010. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate an interest in public relations as a career and have reporting experience either on or off campus.

 

  • Karrington True of Milton, KY was the recipient of the Daine Massie Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2011 and is available to juniors and seniors who are residents of Kentucky.

 

  • Katie Roy of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI was awarded the Edith J. and Charles G. Dickerson Trust Scholarship, which supports students in the ISC and the School of Journalism and Media who show academic excellence and professional promise. It was established to honor the memory of Edith J. and Charles G. Dickerson.

 

  • The John D. Chaplin Scholarship was awarded to Asia Irvin of Lexington, KY. This scholarship honors the memory of John Chaplin, a Lexington radio personality whose on-air name was Herb Oscar Kent. It is available to pre-majors and majors in ISC or the School of Journalism and Media, freshman through junior year.

 

  • Jessica Waters of Dayton, OH has been awarded the Walter and Nellie Evans JAM & ISC General Excellence Scholarship, which financially supports students who exhibit academic excellence and dedication to a career in the mass media and communication industries.

 

  • The Rick Roth Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Elizabeth Wnek of Fairfield, OH. This scholarship was created by three of Roth’s former students to honor him and is awarded to ISC students who demonstrate the qualities embodied by Roth.

 

  • Megan Potts of Louisville, KY was the recipient of the Theodore E. Schulte Memorial Scholarship, which honors the memory of Schulte, an associate professor of advertising in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications for nine years.

 

  • The Sheehy & Associates Educational Advancement Scholarship was awarded to Colbi Nelson of Smyrna, GA. This scholarship is given to students who have completed their junior year as an ISC major and have completed, or plan to complete, a summer internship. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA in ISC courses.

 

  • The Jeremy Michael Streck Memorial Scholarship, which was created in memory of Jeremy Streck, a 1999 ISC graduate and student-athlete, was awarded to Rebekah Courtney of Melber, KY. ISC majors who are enrolled full-time and show professional promise are eligible applicants.
