Kristen Smith's (ISC, 2018) degree from the University of Kentucky College of Communication and Information has propelled her beyond her wildest dreams. She credits her success in her current career to the unique education and experiences she received at UK.
"The foundational knowledge and skills acquired at UK continue to guide me as I navigate my professional path," Smith said. "A degree from UK holds deep personal significance for me; it symbolizes not only academic achievement but also a sense of pride and loyalty."
After graduation, she earned her master’s in sports management from Florida State University. During her time there, she gained hands-on experience in public relations and secured internships at NBC Sports and the Gasparilla Bowl. Subsequently, she held the position of assistant director of athletics integrated communications at the University of Memphis.
"However, I quickly realized that this wasn't my long-term career goal," Smith said. "Sometimes, the most valuable experiences and lessons come from paths we don't initially plan. Embrace the journey and be open to unexpected opportunities that may arise."
Smith's journey led her to the unexpected opportunity of her current role at The Walt Disney Company as a senior corporate communications specialist. As the communications lead for sports advertising, her day-to-day responsibilities include developing communications plans for sports advertising, responding to media inquiries, coordinating interviews for executives, creating visuals and disseminating daily press reports. Overall, she is responsible for conveying the unique ways in which advertisers connect with their target consumers through Disney's diverse sports programming.
"I have found a fulfilling and impactful role in the field of communications," Smith said. "I am responsible for having the knowledge and skills to effectively convey ideas, connect with others and make a meaningful impact in the professional world."
