As a Lexington native, Maggie Davis (JOU, 2020) was hesitant to attend the University of Kentucky, fearing it was too close to home. However, after touring dozens of schools she realized what she needed was already in her own backyard. Her time in the College of Communication and Information ensured she had varied experiences and endless opportunities.
“The most valuable thing I learned was how to make myself valuable,” Davis said. “Throughout my college career, I constantly heard how important it is to be able to do a lot of various aspects of this job.”
Davis began her academic journey as a biology major who was passionate about sports writing only as a hobby. Her JOU 101 class and guidance from professors and mentors led her to a career path in sports writing. Davis started her career as a LEX 18 production assistant for BBN Tonight. Over the past three years, Davis has earned more opportunities and responsibilities that have developed her career from production assistant to hybrid journalist.
Today, Davis is a hybrid journalist for LEX 18, Lexington’s local NBC affiliate. She works on feature stories, in-depth profiles and special reports especially for LEX 18’s show, BBN Tonight. Davis has also worked on live, on-site coverage of major sporting events including March Madness, SEC men's and women's basketball tournaments and the Kentucky Derby.
“My favorite thing about my job is being able to give fans access, information or a perspective they wouldn’t otherwise have,” Davis said.
Davis explained how her focus on learning, broadening her skills and expanding her connections in the journalism field led her to every opportunity she has earned.
“Say yes to every opportunity that comes your way!” Davis said. “Getting that first opportunity can sometimes be the hardest. Once you get your foot in the door, do not be afraid to ask questions or volunteer for extra work to learn something new.”
