The Reference and User Services Association, a division of the American Library Association, has named Matthew Noe the 2026 Isadore Gilbert Mudge Awardee. The award is given to practitioners who expand the definition of reference librarianship through scholarship, service and vision.
Noe’s career at Harvard Medical School’s Countway Library represents one of the most distinctive contributions to reference librarianship in recent memory. His work at the intersection of health sciences librarianship, comics scholarship and medical humanities has helped establish graphic medicine as a recognized academic field — a contribution that reflects precisely the breadth the Mudge Award was designed to honor.
