Kentucky House Minority Leadership Office
The Kentucky House Minority Leadership Office is seeking motivated and civic-minded students to serve in our Legislative Communications Internship. This internship offers hands-on experience in state government and public policy with a focus on communications and media outreach. It offers a unique opportunity to engage directly in the legislative process and communications, strengthen professional skills, and contribute to advancing the priorities of the House Democratic Caucus.
Interns will support staff and legislators through research, communications, digital outreach, constituent outreach, and administrative tasks while building connections with policymakers, legislative staff members, and advocates.
Key Responsibilities
Legislative Research & Policy Support
- Communications and Media Support
- Conduct research on public policy issues, legislation, and state initiatives.
- Draft policy memos, bill summaries, and briefing materials for legislators and staff.
- Track legislation and monitor developments during session and interim periods.
Interim Committee Monitoring
- Attend and observe committee meetings and hearings.
- Take notes, prepare meeting summaries, and provide timely updates to staff.
- Monitor interim committee calendars and assist with scheduling needs.
Communications & Media Support
- Assist with social media management and digital engagement strategies.
- Edit short videos for social media and other digital platforms.
- Assist monitoring media coverage
- Draft and edit content for press releases, newsletters, and member updates.
Administrative Office Support
- Assist with organizational tasks including filing and document management.
- Support office operations to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
Professional Development
- Participate in staff development workshops, networking opportunities, and skill-building sessions.
- Attend meetings and events to gain exposure to the legislative and policymaking environment.
Qualifications
- Strong interest in government, public policy, and communications.
- Excellent writing, research, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with social media platforms preferred.
- Experience in video editing, social media management, or graphic design is a plus.
- Commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
Internship Details
- Location: Kentucky State Capitol Annex, Frankfort, KY
- Time Commitment: Flexible, with preference for 10–15 hours per week (session weeks may vary)
- Compensation: Unpaid but this can be used as your JAM 399 internship class credit if you qualify.
