History
The University of Kentucky proudly celebrates a rich tradition of shaping passionate information professionals, starting with our pioneering library science courses introduced in 1918. A significant highlight of our journey occurred in 1942 when we earned accreditation from the American Library Association (ALA). This distinction makes our program the sole ALA-accredited library science program in the Commonwealth, and we cherish this honor as part of our commitment to excellence.
In 2013-2014, we took an exciting step forward by launching new undergraduate programs in Information Studies (IS) and Information Communication Technology (ICT), available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Our Instructional Communication program equips undergraduates with vital composition and communication skills, while also offering classes that contribute to a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Communication. Plus, we make it easy for master’s students in library science and ICT, as all courses are offered online in an asynchronous format, giving them the flexibility to balance their studies and personal lives.
Our faculty comprises distinguished scholars and innovators across instructional communication, education, computer science, technology, and library and information sciences. We are dedicated to enhancing our students' learning journeys through collaboration among different programs. This dynamic synergy fosters a thriving academic environment, creating strong connections between students and faculty. Together, we are building a vibrant School of Information Science—an inspiring hub for exploration and discovery at the intersection of information, technology, and communication, ultimately benefiting individuals and communities alike!
