UK School of Journalism and Media faculty member Kathryn Montalbano is the 2026 recipient of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's prestigious Covert Award for best article, essay, or book chapter on mass communication history. Montalbano's winning article, published in the journal Communication Law and Policy, investigates how the U.S. press covered defamation law from 1870 to 1876, during the time of Reconstruction. The Covert Award is made annually by the association's History Division. The award is named for Catherine L. Covert, the first woman to lead the History Division and first female professor in the journalism school at Syracuse University. The award is presented at the annual conference of AEJMC.
