Deborah Chung, a professor in the UK College of Communication and Information’s School of Journalism and Media, has been named a 2023-2024 Institute for Diverse Leadership Fellow within the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

The IDL program is dedicated to increasing the number of women and people of color who serve as chairs, directors, deans, endowed chairs and administrators in journalism and communication education as well as on professional boards within the field.

The Institute’s goal is that in making journalism and communication administration more multicultural, it will lead to an emphasis on creating student bodies, faculty and staff, organizations, and curricula more diverse.

During the fellowship year, Chung, along with the other seven 2023-2024 IDL Fellows, will work through the IDL curriculum at their home campus and attend group sessions, workshops and conferences to further the program. Fellows are also matched with an administrative mentor and will then spend a week shadowing their mentor’s work and activities at the end of the program.

Chung, who was also recently elected to the AEJMC Committee on Research for the 2023-2026 term, is UK’s first member of the IDL program in its current form.
