Study Abroad Course in Oaxaca, Mexico: Information Communication Technologies for Social Justice

The School of Information Science’s faculty-directed education abroad program, “Technology for Social Justice” will offer College of Communication and Information students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in Oaxaca, Mexico. This Summer 2024 program is set for students to depart on July 14 and return on August 14.

The immersive course will allow students to explore the dynamic relationship between information and communication technologies (ICTs) and social justice. Focusing on the ways communities create alternative sociotechnical infrastructures (ASIs) to address inequalities and assert their agency, students will perform multifaceted analyses of ICTs' intersection with social justice, examine how marginalized communities fuse ICTs with social institutions and organizations to create ASIs and present case studies using sociological research techniques.

Students participating in this program will receive credits for completing LIS 690: Special Topics and ICT 204: Special Topics.

To be eligible for this program, students must have a 2.5 GPA, be in good standing, not have holds and maintain undergraduate or graduate status. Interested students can apply at ci.uky.edu/mexicoEA until April 1. Additional program information is included in the video below.
