Fake news in the news: Examining coverage of the fake news phenomenon by cable news channels
Deborah S. Chung and Hyun Ju Jeong (presented by Deborah Chung)

This study examines the coverage of the fake news phenomenon from January 2015 through December 2022 on 24-hour cable news channels by employing a computer-aided content (textual) analysis. Further, through analysis of days with dense fake news coverage, this study examines when fake news was covered most intensely and manually analyzes those stories specifically to compare the frames assigned to fake news reports over time. Stories are examined for frames related to gain vs. loss, episodic vs. thematic and fake news context. Associations between other variables, such as story topic, program type and month/year are also considered.
