Graduate Program in Communication Funding

Application Overview

The College of Communication and Information Graduate Program in Communication scholarship application will open early January and will close in March.

To be eligible for a College of Communication and Information Graduate Program in Communication scholarship applicants must:

  1. Be admitted to the University of Kentucky in the College of Communication and Information Graduate Program in Communication.

  2. We offer two types of funding: Scholarships and Awards.

    1. Scholarships: Please submit the application materials listed below.

    2. Awards: Are selected by the graduate award committee or you can also approach a faculty member and tell them you would like to be nominated. If nominated, you will be contacted by the committee to submit application materials.

  3. If awarded a scholarship or award:

    1. Write a thank you letter to the donor that has funded your opportunity.

    2. Attend the CI Student Awards ceremony in the spring of your award year. 

CI Graduate Program in Communication scholarships are for one academic year, in two equal amounts, for the fall and spring semesters. Students must re-apply in the spring semester of each year.

Funding Opportunities in the Graduate Program in Communication

Palmgreen Fellowship Fund*

This fund was established in honor of his retirement in spring 2012 from the College. The Fellowship is awarded to a student enrolled in the College's Graduate Program in Communication, whose major focus is health communication, who has shown a commitment to excellence in the program, and has been significantly involved in health communication and research--preferably research-related to health communication campaigns.


R. Lewis Donohew Graduate Fellowship*

This fellowship is awarded to an incoming doctoral student who has received an assistantship and is focusing on behavioral communications, especially mass or health communication. Donohew retired from UK in 1999, after nearly 35 years of service, during which time he worked tirelessly to promote and enhance the field of health communication.


Tall Grass Farm Foundation Graduate Fellowship/Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues Endowed Fund for Excellence

This fellowship is part of the Institute for Rural Journalism Endowment. The fellowship recipient is determined by the Director of the School of Journalism and Media, the Director of the IRJ and the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. A rural female graduate student in the College shall be considered and if none are eligible, then any graduate student in the College who has an interest in rural journalism may apply. This fund was established by Lois Mateus. Mateus was the recipient of the Kentucky Excellence in Public Relations Award in 2004. Those interested should email ruralj@uky.edu.
