Undergraduate Scholarships

Our scholarships are awarded based on the student’s GPA, leadership potential, community or academic involvement and essay answer.
 

All undergraduate scholarships are applied for through the ScholarshipUniverse platform. Although only one application is required for most College of Communication and Information scholarships, there are many potential awards depending on your major. The College of Communication and Information scholarship application typically opens in early January and closes in March.

John D. Chaplin Scholarship

This endowment was established to award a scholarship to an incoming freshman or returning undergraduate who declares his/her major in the School of Journalism and Media.


Jonathan Krueger Memorial Scholarship

This endowment was established in memory of Jonathan Krueger and to recognize his outstanding accomplishments as Photo Editor of the Kentucky Kernel. The scholarship shall be given to the student who serves as the Kernel's Photo or Multimedia Editor.


Judith G. Clabes Scholarship

This endowment was established to award a scholarship to a declared upper-division student who has demonstrated through classwork, internships, part-time work or extra-curricular activities an exceptional understanding of the importance of First Amendment advocacy and principles in the professional and civic life of a working journalist and/or of the vital relationship of these principles to the preservation of democracy.


L. Niel Plummer Scholarship

This fund supports students that have demonstrated the potential for academic success. The award honors the memory of Plummer, director of the School of Journalism from 1940 to 1965. Plummer is a member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame (1982).


Lt. Col. Charles Richardson DeSpain Journalism Award

This award supports a sophomore, junior or senior journalism major who has demonstrated academic excellence and shows promise. The award was established by the late Mrs. Daysie DeSpain in memory of her son.



Application Overview

To be eligible for a College of Communication and Information scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Be admitted to University of Kentucky with a primary or secondary major in the College of Communication and Information.
  2. Complete the College of Communication and Information application in ScholarshipUniverse.
  3. Write a thoughtful essay of approximately 500 words or less that answers the application questions (details below).
  4. Write a thank you letter to the donor that has funded your scholarship.
  5. Attend the CI Student Awards ceremony in the spring of their award year.

Applicants will be asked to upload a current resume that includes: work experience/internships; community service; involvement/extracurriculars and awards and recognition.

Applicants will be asked to complete an essay of 500 words or less detailing their goals for their professional life, how those goals impact society and how their CI major will help them realize their achievements.

CI scholarships are awarded for one academic year, in two equal amounts, for the fall and spring semesters. Students must re-apply for continuing student scholarships in the spring semester of each year for the following year.
